Academic Opportunities for Graduate Students

UW Oceanography graduate students often participate in academic oportunities provided by related units, and also collaborative programs.  These are some of the opportunities most frequently utilized by our students:

  • Data Science Option focuses on students who will apply existing methods for data science in their research.

  • Advanced Data Science Option The advanced data science option targets students who seek to develop new data science methods and build new data science tools. It focuses on creating an interdisciplinary cohort of data science students taking the same set of advanced data science courses.

  • UW Astrobiology partners with Oceanography to offer a Dual-Title PhD in Astrobiology and Oceanography, allowing students to pursue speceialized concetrations that result in a degree of "Doctor of Philosophy in Oceanography and Astrobiology".

  • UW's Friday Harbor Laboratories is the UW marine station located on San Juan Island, approximately 100 miles northwest of the Seattle Campus.  Faculty and researchers from the University of Washington and around the world come to FHL to study oceanography, chemistry, biology, ecology and other marine disciplines.  Friday Harbor Laboratories offers both research and course opportunities for Oceanography graduate students, and is also where our annual graduate reatreat, Toaster, is held.
