How to Apply
UW School of Oceanography Application Procedures and Instructions
Deadlines:
Applicants must complete the UW Online Application for Graduate Admission by 12:00 midnight (Pacific Standard Time) on December 1. Official TOEFL scores must be received no later than December 1. Students are required to submit unoffical copies of their transcripts before the deadline (December 1) and official transcripts ONLY if accecpted.
Applicant Checklist:
Determine if the faculty you are interested in are currently accepting graduate students by selecting "List View" in the faculty directory.
Complete the Graduate School application
Steps specified by Oceanography:
- Contact the faculty member(s) with whom you are interested in working. Note that they may not respond to you until after applications have been reviewed – this is normal – different faculty have different practices around discussions with graduate students before they apply).
- Submit your Statement of Interest
- Submit your Personal Statement (optional, but recommended)
- Submit a Resume/CV: sample can be found here.
- Designate Recommendations (3 required) after asking them to write you a letter of recommendation.
- Scan unofficial transcripts (official sealed copies will be required if accepted)
- Official TOEFL scores must be reported (for International Students) to UW institution code 4854
- GRE's are no longer required and will not be considered if sent to the University of Washington.

Required Tests:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Official TOEFL scores are required of international applicants, permanent residents, immigrants and transfer students, who are not citizens of the United States on the date of admission, and whose native language is other than English. For further details, including exemptions, please read Understanding the Application Process, "English Language Ability for Admission to the Graduate School." Score reports over two years old (from the test date) are no longer valid.
Official TOEFL test scores from the must be received no later than December 1. The institution code for the University of Washington is 4854.
GRE's are no longer required.
