Dr. Jody Deming receives the APECS International Mentorship Award
Congratulations, Jody!
Dr. Jody W. Deming was awarded the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists' (APECS) international mentorship award in September 2024. This award recognizes the efforts of outstanding mentors within the international polar scientific community. Jody's nomination was spearheaded and supported by her staff, post-docs and graduate students (both past and present) who all wished for the compassion she brings to her "ecosystem", as she calls it, to be recognized.
A few quotes from the supporting letters of the nomination package clearly speak for themselves:
"I still consider my time in her group as the most intellectually stimulating period of my scientific career and think of her and the team she created as my scientific family."
"She tailors her time as a function of what the student requires ... for example I meet with Dr. Deming on a weekly basis for over 1.5h at a time ... that is over 16% of her workday."
"Jody always puts the human first and in doing so fosters a welcoming community where one is invited to be themselves."
"Jody always treated me like a peer, and she always worked hard right along with me to make sure everything got done well. Her mentorship has made me the best scientist, writer, collaborator, and mentor I can be."
