Banse Early Career Scientist Seminar Series

Our annual seminar series is named for Karl Banse, Professor Emeritus in Biological Oceanography, who has been a long-standing pillar of our community. Karl has stated that besides hard work and perseverance, major turns in his career were decided with a great deal of luck, “be it through an accidental conversation at lunch, an almost-missed phone call, or attendance at a somewhat strange seminar.” 

In the spirit of Karl’s words, the Banse Early Career Scientist Seminar Series (BECSSS) was born. We focus on bringing graduate students, post doctoral scholars, and new faculty from underrepresented and historically excluded backgrounds to our department to share their innovative research and to connect with our faculty on future career opportunities. We also reserve space for renowned scholars and those who have chosen careers outside of academia. BECSSS scholars come from all over the country and the world, hosted in person and virtually, to bring their research to us at UW Oceanography.

The BECSS series continues in Autumn Quarter 2023 and will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:50pm PT in the Ocean Science Building, room 425.

Nominations for 2022-2023 are open, so If you would like to recommend a BECSSS scholar, please fill out the nomination form. This is a great opportunity to expand our Oceanography community and we encourage nominations from all members of our department and the broader oceanography community.

We begin reviewing applications early-July, but we will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis.
