Manta Nets
One thing we are doing on this trip is collecting the small bits of plastic floating at the surface of the ocean. For this, we are using a manta net. This is a small floating net that stays at the surface and is slowly towed behind the ship. We deploy this net by hand, and leave it in the water for 20 minutes. Once the sample is aboard ship, we use a series of steps to isolate plastics from other things caught in the net.
