Professor Tom Sanford – A Life Well Lived
We mourn the loss of our long-time faculty member and colleague, Tom Sanford, who passed away on July 12th. As a scientist he was innovative and inspiring. His pioneering theory of how ocean currents interact with the earth's magnetic field enabled a truly novel way to measure seawater motion. He developed technology that uncovered new phenomena and supported a wide range of studies into the ocean's dynamics and its interactions with the sea floor and atmosphere. As a mentor, he was gentle and constructive with criticism, and armed people with the tools and support needed for success. And though he retired five years ago (see photo) he continued as an active member of the Ocean Physics Department at APL and of the School’s faculty, riding his bicycle to campus regularly. He will be sorely missed, and we grieve with his family for their loss. A memorial service will be organized later this year when conditions hopefully permit a gathering to celebrate a life well lived.
