Southampton Exchange Program Application

Brendan Philip Southampton 3

The School of Oceanography is pleased to announce the availability of 1 to 3 undergraduate exchange program slots. You must have junior standing by Autumn Quarter the academic year you plan to study abroad.

Selected students will spend one year in Southampton, England at the University of Southampton, School of Ocean and Earth Science. Students will be matriculated at the UW and will pay tuition here. Students are responsible for travel and living expenses. Students receiving financial aid should contact the UW Financial Aid Office regarding extra expenses that may be incurred by the exchange program. The Selection Committee will announce the winner(s) in mid February.

"One of the highlights of my undergraduate career was my participation in a one-year direct exchange program with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) at the University of Southampton. The NOC campus is located on the waterfront near the Southampton docks and this is where all of the oceanography classes are held. The campus has an extensive marine science library, several lecture halls, multiple computer labs and a full cafeteria! During the two-semester program I studied biological and physical oceanography, with additional courses in geochemistry, paleoclimate change, estuarine circulation, shelf-edge dynamics and geography of climate change. One challenge that I faced while studying at the NOC is that their educational system places a heavy emphasis on independent study. But with the ability to manage time and course work came the opportunity to bike, hike and travel. I would highly recommend this program to any undergraduate that is looking for a chance to spend a year studying abroad at a renowned center for oceanographic research and marine studies.
