Physical Oceanography Research – Polar Oceanography
Oceanographers in the School of Oceanography study the physical mechanisms responsible for the distribution of sea ice and polar ice sheets, the circulation of high-latitude oceans, and the interactions between the atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere that play an important role in regulating Earth's climate and ecosystems.
In addition, our affiliate faculty at UW's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) hire postdocs, graduate students and undergraduates to do research in this area:
- At the Polar Science Center, oceangraphers conduct basic and applied research on the oceanography, climatology, meteorology, biology and ecology of the ice-covered regions on Earth and elsewhere in our solar system
- At the Ocean Physics Department, oceanographers pursue research focused primarily on small-scale and meso-scale physical processes, with a number of exciting projects in polar regions.
