Ocean Intern
Students with a passion for science explore the waters of Puget Sound
In the summer of 2015, ten high school students were chosen to participate in a four-week paid internship program at the University of Washington’s School of Oceanography. This diverse group of students, all with a passion for science and the environment, explored the waters of Puget Sound, conducted ocean science experiments on a research vessel, and participated in local field trips.
The Ocean Intern program was created by Professor Rick Keil from the Aquatic Organic Geochemistry lab at the University of Washington’s School of Oceanography. The objective of the program is to provide high school students, in the summers of 2015–2017, with experiences in environmental chemistry and oceanography research — both in the field and in the lab. Funding for the internships is provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation, with additional resources provided by the University of Washington College of the Environment and the School of Oceanography.
