Announcing Graduate Application Mentorship Program (GAMP)
Applying to a graduate program is a huge amount of work and can be challenging to navigate. The School of Oceanography acknowledges that these obstacles frequently make it more difficult for underrepresented students and/or students without resources and guidance to succeed at the application process. Both the students and the administration at the School of Oceanography are committed to increasing the diversity and representation of students at our school. The Graduate Application Mentorship Program (GAMP) was created to connect prospective students with current graduate students to help demystify the graduate application process and provide tips and guidance for submitting an application. Anyone looking to apply to the University of Washington School of Oceanography and current UW Oceanography undergraduates looking to apply here or elsewhere are encouraged to apply.
Oceanography Summer Adventures
Curious about what some of our oceanographers are up to this summer? This week we are highlighting our undergraduate student, Arden Lichter, and postdoctoral scholar, Dr. Sophie Nuber, who are currently conducting research in Taiwan. Thank you to the Alyn and Alison Duxbury Endowed Student Support Fund which is contributing to Arden's senior thesis project. Here's a message from Arden:
My summer adventure has taken me to Taipei, Taiwan to derive nitrogen isotopes from coral. I have been learning, practicing, and supporting my amazing advisor, Dr. Nuber, as I work to get precise data for my undergraduate thesis, which involves a lengthy five day procedure. Throughout my last two weeks, I have had not only an awesome opportunity to work with a NoxBox, gas bench and mass spectrometer, but also have gotten to immerse myself in Taipei culture and cuisine. This experience has been filled with fun and I already can’t wait to come back to Taiwan.
Farewell to Michele Batzaya!
Those of you who have stepped into the main office have probably met Michele, one of our student assistants. Michele is moving on from the UW. She will move to Emory University in Atlanta. Her last day is August 15. We appreciate her cheerful demeanor and all the work she did to get us reimbursed! Best Wishes, Michele!
Ocean Summer Writing Group
Kendall Valentine will be hosting a writing workshop every week throughout summer! From Kendall:
"This summer I would like to set up a standing meeting time targeted for people to work on writing and research. Last summer we did this as an MG&G group - students, postdocs, and faculty - and I think we got a lot done! I've done several workshops like this featuring the Pomodoro method, and I find it can be very productive. My goal is to set up a recurring 2-hour weekly meeting where we sit and write together - I'd bring some snacks, and this provides a great time to get writing on any project you may have and the group will help hold you accountable."
When: Wednesdays 10am-12pm all summer!
Where: OTB 155
