Our New Interim Director - Susan Hautala
Join us in welcoming our recently named interim director Susan Hautala! Prior to receiving her PhD in 1992, Susan was and has continued to be an active and valuable member of the School and UW community. Moving forward, any business related to the 23-24 academic year should be sent to Rick. New requests or questions about the future can be emailed to both Rick and Susan.
Creating a Sense of Belonging in the Geosciences
The College of the Environment recently published an article on the GEODUC and IBIS programs at UW College of the Environment. The article describes the overall impact of a program that supports nontraditional transfer students who would like to take marine and Earth sciences courses. Congratulations to Mikelle Nuwer and LuAnne Thompson for the continued success of GEODUC. Read the article here!
Anitra Ingalls - OBVI and Schmidt Sciences Awardee
Congratulations to Anitra Ingalls who was recently selected to join the Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute (OBVI), an organization that aims to address gaps in ocean data and modeling by improving the breadth of research in the field and expanding capacity to understand ocean resources. Anitra's project is titled Animals as Living Bioreactors: The role of animal gut microbiomes in shaping oceanic carbon cycling and export. The team will work with scientists in Madagascar and Brazil to better understand how sea creature digestive tracts work as tiny bioreactors that facilitate carbon flux in the ocean, with potential global implications. Cheers to you Anitra! Read more here.
Ocean Summer Writing Group
Kendall Valentine will be hosting a writing workshop every week throughout summer! From Kendall:
"This summer I would like to set up a standing meeting time targeted for people to work on writing and research. Last summer we did this as an MG&G group - students, postdocs, and faculty - and I think we got a lot done! I've done several workshops like this featuring the Pomodoro method, and I find it can be very productive. My goal is to set up a recurring 2-hour weekly meeting where we sit and write together - I'd bring some snacks, and this provides a great time to get writing on any project you may have and the group will help hold you accountable."
When: Wednesdays 10am-12pm all summer!
Where: OTB 155
