Cory Bantam - SoO Alum & Local Hero
Cory Bantam, alumni of the School of Oceanography undergraduate program and crewmember of the water taxi MV Doc Maynard, was recently honored at a Kraken game for his heroic work in stopping a loose barge from colliding with the Seattle waterfront on Thursday, November 2nd. The massive six-story barge was drifting alone through Elliott Bay when Cory and his captain Dan Krehbiel noticed and took action. The crew steered their water taxi toward the barge, pushing the ferry’s bow against the loose platform to move it away from the waterfront and towards the less busy Pier 66 marina. The Kraken donated $32,000 in the crew's name to the Maritime High School for their efforts. Way to go Cory! You can read more here.
Student ROV Team at UW Providing Barreleye for Science and Maintenance
The Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles Team at UW has competed in the MATE ROV competition since 2011, iterating and improving ROV designs to achieve success in the competition. Following its success in the competition, the team has decided to expand operations by making their latest ROV, Barreleye, available to the public for scientific, maintenance, exploration, and other uses. Barreleye has a modular manipulator system which allows the team to customize its toolset for given tasks and iterate on designs quickly. If you have an application you'd like to discuss with us, please email uwrov@uw.edu with any questions and for information on specifications, capabilities, and suggested donations. You can also visit the ROV website here.
