UW Oceanography Alum Benjamin Van Mooy Named 2024 MacArthur Fellow
University of Washington School of Oceanography alum and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution oceanographer Benjamin Van Mooy has been awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, informally known as the “genius grant.” For more information, you can go here.
Faculty Recital: Fluid Dynamics, October 8th, 7:30pm
Violinist Rachel Lee Priday celebrates the release of her solo debut album, Fluid Dynamics, with a live multi-media world premiere performance. The result of a unique collaboration between ocean scientist Dr. Georgy Manucharyan of UW's School of Oceanography and Rachel Lee Priday, Fluid Dynamics combines videos of fluid motion experiments with new commissions from leading young American composers Gabriella Smith, Timo Andres, Paul Wiancko, Leilehua Lanzilotti, Cristina Spinei, and Christopher Cerrone. CV Workshop (Peer Editing Focus) with Dr. Kendall Valentine
Just in time for fellowship applications, as well as graduate school applications, Kendall is hosting a CV workshop this Thursday, October 10th from 4:30-5:30 pm in the OTC (OTB 051). This workshop will be targeted at those who have some form of CV already, but all are welcome.
We will spend ~15 minutes talking about the essential elements of a CV, 15 minutes of an activity to practice your skills, and then 30 minutes of Q+A and peer editing. **If possible, bring 2 hard copies of your CV for peer editing**
Lecture: “Warmer Winters and Wavier Jet Streams: The Cold Season in a Changing Climate”
Jonathan Martin, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison, will give the Atmospheric Sciences Hobbs Lecture.
As the Earth warms, weather patterns may change. Dr. Martin will talk about how the jet stream and its undulations may be altered by global warming, in turn influencing the frequency and intensity of cold and heat waves. More information can be found here.

Dr. Ginger Armbrust, New Associate Dean for Research
University of Washington professor and biological oceanographer, Dr. Virginia (Ginger) Armbrust, has been named Associate Dean for Research in the College of the Environment, and started Fall Quarter. Dr. Armbrust replaces UW Atmospheric and Climate Science professor, Dr. Shuyi Chen, who returns full time to teaching and research.
New Wellness Rooms in OSB/OCN and MSB
The School has new wellness rooms open. Located in OSB/OCN 504 and MSB 312, they are equipped with cozy seating, mini fridges, and can be locked for privacy. They are available as lactation stations, for reflection and prayer, and space for a mental health break.
Coding Help with Dr. Wing-Ho Ko
Anyone in our Oceanography community who needs coding help can drop in to the Ocean Science Building, Room 418 on Tuesdays: 10:00am-12:00pm and Fridays: 1:00-3:00pm.
