Senior thesis title and description: "Pioreactors at Sea: Microbial Community Response to Different Incubation Methods".
My study found that a continuous incubation method netted a greater microbial community response to a simulated day-night cycle. This response was further exacerbated when dissolved inorganic nutrients were added. This continuous incubation method utilized a system that had never before been used at sea and was compared to a more traditional batch incubation setup.
Most memorable experience as an undergraduate in the School of Oceanography: From trips on both the Thompson and the Carson, work at NOAA, glaciology in Alaska, and studying in Friday Harbor, there have been so many memorable experiences during my time as UW Oceanography undergraduate! If I had to pick one, I would chose the incredible microbial research I have been able to conduct, both on the Ocean 220 cruise and as a part of the Deming Lab.
Favorite class: Ocean 330 because of all the incredible concepts covered in a discipline I am very passionate about (also, shout out to Ocean 215 for getting me coding!!!)
Future plans after graduation: My current plan is to attend graduate school for my PhD! I haven't made my decision on where so stay tuned!
