Haiku 2023 - Marshes

Meadowlands Lyndhurst
Marshes march along
The shoreline its own domain
Dancing with the sea

If we continue
North can’t move and South can’t rise
Both are screwed and die

Resiliency
Marshes exhibit in spades
While dug by the sea

--Jackson P.-R.

People and nature
Intertwined at the Sea’s edge
We live, wetlands die

The sea is growing
Humanity fights the rise
Wetlands lose the fight

-- Zac P.

People exposed to storms
Sea level rise drowns wetlands
Bye bye Miami

-- Christine P.-C.

Bastions of fauna,
Diverse biota rely
on these unique zones

Accretion’s too slow
We’ve developed the wetlands
The South is sinking

Miami houses
Will all soon be property
On the waterfront

--Alex

Northern marshes rise,
slower than the sea, aside
beachfront homes goodbye

sandy wetlands creep
up the shore, to-wards your home
soon will be the sea

-- Morgan P.

Humans need them too
"We live in societies..."
That marshes protect

Inundate from storms
Provide value in themselves
But perhaps no more...

As the oceans grow
Southern marshes flee the sea
Many can't escape

Northern marshes rise
Soils grow as do the seas
Half will not survive

As the wetlands fail
Tidal power wrecks the land
Cries from mouths and eyes

DeSantis could drown
No more '24 campaign
...maybe not so bad?

Then again, if the
Wetlands are at risk then lots
of innocents die

So we must protect
Marshes from the threats they face
Tied to tide's advance

-- Isaac O.
