Day 2 Senior 2014 Thesis Cruise
December 12 2014
Today we abandoned a net tow due to a large amount of debris near the sampling site. The Thompson then traveled through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and into open ocean, where the ride started to get bumpy… At around 01:00 swells started to increase and by 04:00 they were 9.5 meters in height with 40-knot winds. Dramamine saved the day for many, but others weren’t so lucky and had a rough night.
Our first CTD cast is to be deployed at 09:00 outside the entrance to Nootka Sound. The depth at this station is approximately 1500 meters, so the cast will take an hour or so. After this, the Thompson will head directly east into Nootka Sound where the seas will calm, and hopefully the need for Dramamine will dissipate!
