She teaches introductory oceanography courses, develops and assesses curriculum in oceanography, and is responsible for the training and mentoring of graduate teaching assistants in the College of the Environment. She is currently an active member of the College of the Environment's Teaching Support Team, and was a Lead Facilitator for the UW Evidence-based Teaching Program. The focus of Mikelle's research is on pedagogical interventions that contribute to student academic success.
I am currently the chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee for the School of Oceanography. Our committee is actively working on improving the recruitment and retention of black, indigenous, and people of color in our school. Our main areas of focus are on revising the admission criteria for graduate admissions, creating a handbook for hiring, and creating a supportive environment for our students, faculty and staff.
