Current Graduate Students
- Georges "Gio" Kanaan Gio received the Leo Cup to identify novel naturally occurring emulsifiers to fight future arctic and subarctic oil spills, and to examine the effects of microplastics in these environments. He published his subsequent master's work on modeling the microbial energetics in an Alaskan cryopeg. He is currently investigating how DNA methylation may serve as a memory mechanism in sea-ice bacteria. He passed is general exam in Winter 2024 (gkanaan AT uw.edu).

- Jackson Page-Roth Currently working on the applicaiton of chemostats to understanding nutrient and temperature limitations in the ocean. Heading for graduate school at the University of Tennessee in Fall 2025.

- Shelly Carpenter Research Scientist/Engineer IV/Lab Manager. See Shelly’s other exploits at the APL-Polar Science Center: Sustained Life in Ice and the Rotten Ice Project. Shelly received the College of the Environment award for Distinguished Staff Member 2018-2019 (seashell AT uw.edu). She retired in Fall 2022 after 31 years as the keystone species in the Deming Ecosystem, but continues to provide support to the lab given her extensive history and knowledge base and work with Jody to wrap up some remaining projects.
