Sunset Sailing and Seafloor Mapping

Sunset behind Tau Island

By Aisha, 8-12 watch

The geology crew: Aisha, Sophie, Marley, and Zach collected 5 sediment samples throughout the last 24 hours, and continued the seafloor mapping through the night, finishing at 7 am. They found the sediment samples matched their hypothesis where large pieces stayed near the eruption site and smaller-grained sediment was carried farther, which was very exciting! These samples are also critical in calibrating our multibeam backscatter, meaning the data they collected will have the needed context. They were also able to use the Chirp Echosounder smoothly,
which was not expected! It needed constant babysitting, which was the majority of work while sitting in the control room.

Left island at 0700 after observing sediment samples, using the multi-beam sensor and the Chirp to observe the seafloor. Cloudy, sunny, and more windy than the day before. At 0900 we took a bucket sample for pollutants. Currently in transit to the last bucket sample (8°S) and stations near the equator.
